777JILI Poker Games: Five Variants, One Hand Ranking

Poker games share one hand ranking and differ in how cards are dealt: draw, stud and shared-card games all rank five-card hands, and a house-banked table plays you against the dealer instead of other players.

Poker games all start from the same five-card hand, then split into families by the way cards reach you. This 777JILI page lays out the best-known variants, the cards they share, and the point where a casino table stops being poker against other people. Every rule below is attributed to the rule book, regulator or probability table that prints it, and 21+ applies to any game that involves a stake.

Five poker games and how each one deals

pagat.com’s poker index summarises five variants that most players meet first. They differ in which cards are private, which are face up, and how many betting rounds sit between the deal and the showdown.

  1. Five Card Draw. Each player gets five private cards, bets, discards any number and receives replacements, then bets again. pagat.com calls it one of the oldest and best known poker games.
  2. Five Card Stud. One card face down, then one face up, then three more face up, with a betting round after each, so every player ends with one hidden card and four showing.
  3. Seven Card Stud. Two cards down and one up to start, then three more face up and a last card face down: four cards showing and three private. pagat.com says it is now more popular than the five-card version.
  4. Texas Hold’em. Two private cards, then a three-card flop, a turn and a river shared by everyone. Each player has seven cards available and builds the best five.
  5. Omaha. Four private cards, the same shared board, and a showdown that must use exactly two hole cards and exactly three board cards.

Poker cards: 52 cards, thirteen ranks, no suit order

The poker cards in a standard game are a 52-card pack. pagat.com ranks single cards ace, king, queen, jack, 10 down to 2, and states that in standard poker there is no ranking between the suits when hands are compared.

A hand is five cards. When a game gives you more, such as the seven in Texas Hold’em, pagat.com says the unused cards play no part, and two hands with equal five-card combinations are equal whatever the leftover cards are.

Two edits change this picture, and each one is a line to look for on a rule sheet:

  1. A joker or wild card, which makes five of a kind possible and lifts it above a royal flush.
  2. Low poker, which reverses the goal so the lowest hand wins.

Ten hand types and how often each one is dealt

Wizard of Odds counts every five-card hand from a fresh 52-card deck with no wild cards, using the best five of five cards. The table below copies its counts, and its flush and straight rows leave out straight flushes and royal flushes.

Add the ten rows and you reach 2,598,960, the count of all five-card hands in the deck. pagat.com adds that poker’s ranking order follows how rarely a hand occurs in straight poker, meaning five cards dealt from a 52-card deck with no wild cards and no chance to improve the hand.

Players against each other, or against the dealer

The first split between poker games is who your opponent is. The UK Gambling Commission’s glossary defines peer-to-peer gambling as customers gambling against each other rather than against the house, and gives poker as its example.

A casino table game can borrow poker’s hand and still change the opponent. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s Three Card Poker rules define an ante wager to compete against the dealer’s hand, a play wager equal to the ante, and a pair plus wager that competes against a posted payout ledger.

How a long run goes at a house-banked table is a house edge meaning question, and the stake you set per hand is explained under bet unit meaning.

Chips, blinds and the dealer button

Betting starts with a forced payment. pagat.com’s betting rules describe antes, paid by everyone, and blinds, placed by the players immediately to the left of the dealer seat, and give a worked example: a $2-$4 fixed-limit game with a $1 small blind and a $2 big blind.

Three things at the table carry those rules, and each has its own page:

  1. The value of each chip, covered in what poker chips are worth.
  2. The seat order, the button and the blinds, covered in the button and blinds at a poker table.
  3. The way a mixed game moves the button, which the Poker TDA’s rules address for events that switch between hold’em and stud.

Finding a poker game in the lobby you use

This site documents poker games and does not run a table. To find one, use the checks below inside the lobby of the casino account you hold, which is the only place that shows what that lobby carries; the wider 777JILI casino search page explains how this site treats that name.

  1. Search the lobby’s game list for the variant’s name, such as Texas Hold’em.
  2. Open the table’s rules screen and read which hand ranking and deck it uses.
  3. Check whether the table is played against other players or against the dealer.
  4. Confirm you are 21+ and set a spending limit before the first hand.

FAQ

How many poker games are there?

Too many to count, because home games invent their own. pagat.com's poker index summarises five best-known variants: Five Card Draw, Five Card Stud, Seven Card Stud, Texas Hold'em and Omaha, plus low and high-low versions of several.

Do all poker games use the same hand ranking?

Standard high poker does. pagat.com says a poker hand is five cards and the ranking runs from straight flush down to nothing. Low poker and wild-card games change the order, so read the rules of the game in front of you.

What is the difference between poker against players and poker against the dealer?

The UK Gambling Commission defines peer-to-peer gambling as customers gambling against each other rather than against the house, and names poker as an example. Massachusetts' Three Card Poker rules instead put each player against the dealer's hand.

Does the suit matter in poker?

Not for comparing hands. pagat.com says standard poker has no ranking between suits, so the king of hearts and the king of spades are equal. Suits are sometimes used to settle seating, who bets first or an odd chip.

Can I find these poker games at the lobby I use?

Open that lobby's game list and search for the variant's name, then read the rules screen of the table before you sit. This site explains the games and does not offer a table.

Ano ang pinakasikat na poker game?

pagat.com calls Texas Hold'em one of the most popular variants, helped by televised tournaments and online play. Five Card Draw is described there as one of the oldest and best known.
