A video table that freezes while your screen still looks connected is the classic reason to run a ping test. The test takes a minute, and the answer is a number in milliseconds you can compare. This page walks the steps on a phone; the surrounding settings are on the phone browser pillar.
What a ping test measures
Ookla’s methodology says latency, referred to as “Ping” in Speedtest results, is the bidirectional round-trip time for a packet of data to travel between two endpoints, measured in milliseconds (ms). Cloudflare’s learning page words it as the amount of time it takes for a data packet to go from one place to another. RFC 792 defines the Echo or Echo Reply message of the Internet Control Message Protocol.

Latency or ping

Data that fails to reach the final destination (Zoom)
Download and upload speed

Throughput of the connection (Ookla, M-Lab)
Steps to run a ping test on your phone
Settle on one connection. Choose Wi-Fi or mobile data, keep it for the whole test, and close unused tabs and apps, as Chrome’s help advises.
Open a browser-based test. Go to speed.measurementlab.net and run NDT, which M-Lab says reports upload and download speeds and latency metrics.
Write down latency in milliseconds, plus the two speeds from the result screen.
Repeat twice at other moments, a few minutes apart and once at a busier hour, then compare the three readings.
Compare with a published figure. Set your latency beside the 150 ms Zoom recommends for calls, and read the game’s own info screen for any requirement.
Network speed is not latency
Ookla says Speedtest measures the full throughput capacity of a connection, so download and upload speed describe how much, while latency describes how long one trip takes. A fast connection can still show a high latency.
Worked example with round numbers: three runs read 40, 45 and 180 ms. The gap between the best and worst is 180 minus 40, which is 140 ms, and a spread that wide points to a connection that changes minute to minute.
Latency under load and distance
Ookla measures three latencies: base latency to a single server, multi-server latency from several nearby servers, and latency under load, when throughput is maximised. It also says distant servers can introduce latency and additional network bottlenecks. A test that picks a nearby server is the more relevant one.

What Ookla says it is
Base latency
Latency to a single server
Multi-server latency
Latency measured from multiple nearby servers
Latency under load
Latency when the connection’s throughput is maximized
Run your own test once with other tabs idle, so the reading you record is a base reading.
Which numbers hold a live game
Zoom’s statistics page recommends a latency of 150 ms or less, jitter of 40 ms or less and packet loss of 2% or less, and says higher latency gives noticeable delays between video and audio. Those are Zoom’s call figures. No vendor page saved for this site gives a figure for live casino video, so the studio’s own pages are the place to read. Pragmatic Play, for one, lists live casino among its specialisms on its Pragmatic Play studio page.
When the numbers look fine but play still stalls
If the three readings look steady, the browser is the next place to look.
Ookla's methodology says latency, referred to as Ping in Speedtest results, is the bidirectional round-trip time for a packet of data to travel between two endpoints, measured in milliseconds.
What latency is good enough for a live game?
No vendor page saved for this site gives a figure for live casino video. Zoom recommends 150 ms or less for calls, and the game's own info screen is where its requirements appear.
Is network speed the same as latency?
No. Ookla treats throughput, which includes download and upload speed, and latency as separate measurements of the same connection.
